Child Support by State — What You Actually Need to Know
Every state uses a different formula to calculate child support. The variables include both parents' incomes, the number of overnights, healthcare costs, childcare expenses, and more. No single online calculator can replicate that complexity accurately — and many don't even try.
We removed our calculator.
After testing it against real cases — including our own — we found the results were frequently inaccurate. The formulas vary too much by state, and small differences in how income, parenting time, or deductions are defined can change the estimate by hundreds of dollars per month. Rather than give you a number that might be wrong, we're pointing you to your state's official source.

Why Documentation Matters More Than Estimates
An estimate tells you what support might be. Documentation determines what it actually becomes.
Parenting time determines credits
Most states reduce child support when the paying parent has the child for a significant number of overnights. But courts only apply those credits if the overnights are documented. A written log with dates and exchanges is what makes the credit stick.
Expenses get added on top — if you can prove them
Medical costs, childcare, and educational expenses are typically added to the base support amount. Courts only consider what is documented. Receipts, invoices, and records of unreimbursed payments directly affect the final number.
Modifications require a paper trail
When you seek a modification — or need to defend against one — the evidence that matters most is a documented history: what was paid, when, what was disputed, and what changed. Courts rely on records, not verbal accounts.
